    How these holidays work

    The rules that decide whether you can take a day off, and what happens when a holiday lands on a weekend.

      Gazetted holidays are compulsory. Offices remain closed. An employee cannot be recalled without a written order and compensatory off in lieu.
    • 2
      Restricted holidays are optional. Choose from the notified list with prior intimation to your controlling authority. Unused entitlement lapses at year end.
    • 3
      Moon-sighting dates can move. Id-ul-Fitr, Bakrid, Muharram and Milad-un-Nabi may shift by one or two days. Those entries are marked with an asterisk.
    • 4
      Three national holidays bind everyone. Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti apply to every establishment, including the private sector.
    • 5
      A holiday on a Sunday is compensated. The preceding Saturday or following Monday is notified as a compensatory holiday by the department concerned.

    No. Madhya Pradesh issues its own annual holiday notification, which includes regional festivals that do not appear on the DoPT Central list, and may omit some Central holidays. Only Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti are common to both. Central Government offices located within the state follow the Central list, not the state one.

    RH What is the difference between a public holiday and a restricted holiday?

    A public or gazetted holiday closes the office for everyone. A restricted holiday is optional: an employee may choose it in place of working, within the limit set by the state, and must inform the controlling officer in advance.
